Session 21

2026-09-08 · 2026-W37 ✓ reviewed

What happened

Taught arithmetic operators properly before any task was set, correcting the previous session's order. Retrieval starter 3/3 unaided: input() returns a string, what int() does, and why a named constant is used (gave the one-place-to-change answer). Taught real division, integer division and modulus with 17/5, and their AQA pseudo-code names DIV and MOD; she predicted 20/8, 20//8 and 20%8 correctly, including the modulus. Taught the Python 3 float trap — / always returns a float and 50 + 50*0.2 prints 60.0 — and she identified int() as the fix unprompted. Then solved Code Lab "Adding VAT" in 2 runs, unaided, using the constant, int() on input and int() on output. Reasoned correctly that // gives the hours and % the minutes for 135 minutes, and was set Code Lab "Hours and minutes"; its result was not reported before the session ended. Practice run not yet in the tracker: the app re-sent the previous day's client_run_id, so the tracker correctly treated it as a duplicate and Adding VAT is not on the practice board.

Planned next

Confirm the outcome of Code Lab "Hours and minutes" (p08-time) — set at the end of this session, result not seen. Then P03 selection (if/else) with the boundary-testing idea, since every task from here needs it. Open with retrieval on // vs % and the float trap. NOTE FOR PLANNER/PARENT: she logs the Code Lab run the following day, so practice rows will trail sessions by a day; the app is also reusing the previous day's client_run_id, which makes the second day a silent no-op until fixed.

What this session changed

TopicNameChangeEvidence recorded
P08Developing → Developing8 Sep: predicted 20/8=2.5, 20//8=2, 20%8=4 unaided; identified // and % as the operators for hours and minutes from 135; applied arithmetic plus int() correctly in Code Lab 'Adding VAT', solved in 2 runs without code being written for her
P02Developing → Secure8 Sep: solved Code Lab 'Adding VAT' (constant, int() on input, arithmetic, int() on output) in 2 runs with no code supplied, a harder framing than 'Name badge' and in a later session than the 7 Sep teaching
P01Not started → Developing8 Sep: gave the named-constant justification in her own words in the retrieval starter — value written once, so easier to change
