Session 58

2026-09-29 · 2026-W40 ✓ reviewed

What happened

Binary opened from zero and taken through both conversions and binary addition, every conversion right unaided; stopped at her "times up" with hexadecimal just opened. Ran ~11:22–12:20, ahead of block 7 (work counted against it). Starter, no notes, 3 set / 3 attempted / 3 unaided / 0 blank: "4"+"5" with/without int() → "45 and 9"; while line for 'until 20 or more' → "while guess < 20" (logic right, colon missing, named to her); spot-the-error → missing colon on line 2 and capital Print on line 3, both found. D02 taught: place-value row written; open "why double?" say-back off-target ("you can show more numbers"), corrected (two symbols per box). Binary→decimal: 00101101 → 45 with the tutor, 10010110 → "2, 4, 16 & 128 or 150" alone with columns listed. Decimal→binary: 77 built column by column with prompts (0 / "01 and 13" / then 01001101 alone), 45 → 00101101 alone (the placement item she could not do on 28 Sep), 11111111 → 255 alone. Exit ticket typed (she declined paper: "i can't write them by hand sorry"): 11100010 → 226 ✓, 201 → 11001001 ✓, explain-why-255 left out of the first reply, then attempted after "one thing at a time" prompt: "the largest number in them is 128. When they're all one, we add them all together" — about 1/2, second half present, doubling row and the sum absent. D05 taught: four rules copied; carry say-back in own words ("they would make the next number... put zero and then put a one on the one to the left"); 45+22 → 01000011 alone in one reply without carries shown; 103+93 → 11000100 with all seven carries named alone; overflow identified as "one of the numbers is the max number we can put", term supplied. D03: sixteen symbols and one-hex-digit-equals-four-bits stated; first check (D in decimal, 1011 in decimal) set and not answered — stopped. 0 blank of 12 items after prompting; 1 item initially skipped. No handwritten code or working photographed. Condition-at-end loop (session 48 plan) not reached: the block was set for binary.

Planned next

FIRST: finish the hex opener — D in decimal and 1011 in decimal from the 8-4-2-1 row (same two questions) — then hex properly: split 8 bits into two groups of four, each group to one hex digit, both ways, and the one-sentence 'why hex is used' (D01). Starter, no notes: 10110010 to decimal with working; 90 to binary; one binary addition with at least three carries; the while line for 'until the total is over 100'. Handwritten working still owed — ask for the paper version of the exit ticket and photograph it; she declined paper today. Next programming block: the condition-at-end loop from session 48's plan, untouched since.

What this session changed

TopicNameChangeEvidence recorded
D02Not started → Developing29 Sep: taught from zero on paper (place-value row, 'does it fit' method). Binary→decimal 10010110 → 150 alone; decimal→binary 45 → 00101101 alone (the placement item), 11111111 → 255; typed exit ticket 11100010 → 226 and 201 → 11001001, 2/2 unaided. 5 conversions unaided, 0 wrong. notstarted → developing, single level. Secure needs a later-session retest by hand with working shown.
D05Not started → Not started29 Sep: four addition rules taught; carry explained in her own words; 45+22 → 01000011 alone (no carry row shown), 103+93 → 11000100 with all seven carries named alone, 2/2. Overflow: named the idea ('the max number we can put'), term supplied by the tutor. Proposed developing; not moved — two items only, no independent exit item and overflow not yet produced by her.
D03Not started → Not started29 Sep: opened only — 16 symbols and 'one hex digit = four bits' stated; first check (D → 10, 1011 → 11) set and not answered, session stopped. Untaught.
D01Not started → Not started29 Sep: 'why does each column double' answered off-target to the open form ('you can show more numbers'), corrected: two symbols per box. Why-255 explain 1/2 after prompt: 'all ones, add them together' present, doubling row and the sum absent. Why hex is used not yet taught.
P17Developing → Developing29 Sep starter, no notes, 4 days on: "4"+"5" → 45 and with int() → 9, unaided. Third cold success on the text-join item.
P05Developing → Developing29 Sep starter, no notes: 'until 20 or more' → while guess < 20 (boundary right in production, colon missing); spot-the-error found missing colon and capital Print, 2/2 unaided. Condition-at-end form still untaught.
