Session 3

2026-09-02 · 2026-W36

What happened

P2–P3 expected and relative frequency. Starter 4/5 first attempt: N10 0.444… → 4/9, R11 42 mph, A17 x = −5, R4–R6 3:7 with 21 red → 49 blue. A4 wrong: 3(2x−5) − 2(x+4) given as 4x−7, corrected to 4x−23 only after being prompted to expand all four terms. Expected frequency taught: 300 rolls → 50; 0.15 × 400 → 60 non-calculator via the 40 + 20 split. She initially called a frequency a probability; the "P(4) = 1/6, expected frequency = 1/6 × 300" wording was modelled and stuck. Relative frequency: drawing pin 130/200 → 13/20 simplified unprompted, then 650 in 1000 — concept run in both directions unaided. Practice 5/5 on the maths: Q1 45 heads, Q2 9 late trains, Q3 blues 75 (all three colours given when only blues were asked — answer-targeting), Q4 60/250 → 6/25 then 240, Q5 Marcus more reliable with a correct if loosely worded reason. Exit ticket 3/4: Q1 9 rainy days, Q2 120 purple, Q3 9/200 then 900 faulty bolts, all independent. Q4 (why 7 heads in 10 flips does not make P(heads) = 0.7) left blank, then only the small-sample half; she did not identify that "fair" fixes P = 1/2, and said "I don't know" rather than guessing. Theoretical probability versus relative frequency then taught directly. AMENDED: this session was originally logged before it finished — Q4, Q5 and the exit ticket above were completed after the first write. Note the session date is as originally recorded and has not been re-confirmed.

Planned next

P4–P5 probabilities summing to 1 and sample-size reasoning. Open with a 6x²+8x-type factorisation (A4 demotion), a cube-root rearrangement (A5 loose end) and a frequency tree drawn on paper (P1 loose end).

What this session changed

TopicNameChangeEvidence recorded
P2-P3Gap → DevelopingTaught 2 Sep. Expected frequency: 300 rolls → 50, and 0.15 × 400 → 60 non-calculator via 40 + 20, both correct. Relative frequency: drawing pin 130/200 → 13/20 simplified unprompted, then 650 in 1000. Practice Q1 45 heads and Q2 9 late trains correct; Q3 expected blues 75 correct. Taught and practised in one session with support, so developing.
A4Secure → DevelopingCORRECTION — demotion. 2 Sep starter: 3(2x−5) − 2(x+4) given as 4x−7; the sign on −2 × (+4) was wrong and only corrected to 4x−23 after being prompted to expand all four terms separately. Third wobble on the same sub-skill since going secure on 13 Aug: re-scaffolding needed 16 Aug, collecting-terms slip on the 19 Aug exit check, sign error now. Demoted per the starter-failure rule.
N10Developing → Developing2 Sep starter: 0.444… → 4/9 correct. First recurring-decimal question asked since it was taught on 18 Aug, so the loose end now has one correct independent answer. One question only, so no promotion.
A17Secure → Secure2 Sep starter: 4x + 7 = 2x − 3 → x = −5 correct, but answer only with no working, despite working being asked for. 20 days after securing on 13 Aug — one day short of the three-week spacing rule, and a single question — so not promoted to exam-ready.
R11Secure → Secure2 Sep starter: 63 miles in 1 hour 30 minutes → 42 mph, correct (calculator).
R4-R6Secure → Secure2 Sep starter: red and blue in the ratio 3:7 with 21 red → 49 blue, correct. Scaling from one known share; does not test the ratio↔fraction conversion that R7-R8 still needs.
