Session 18

2026-09-10 · 2026-W37 ✓ reviewed

What happened

Ran the missed 10:45 block at 15:40. Starter scored: "Nothing beside remains" exact (the 'beside' fix holding after two days), "look at my works" for "Look on" — one clean, one near-miss. Closed the last loose end on Ozymandias: Shelley's 1818 context, expelled from Oxford, hostile to inherited power; she identified George III as the real target after one nudge. Taught context as a clause, not a paragraph, with a model sentence. First paragraph attempt wrote what/how/why as visible headings, stacked three quotations and misquoted two of them. Rewritten as continuous prose in ten minutes: one angle, one correct quotation, context welded to the point. Session ended at her request with the final sentence set but not attempted.

Planned next

PENDING from this session: (1) the closing sentence on what Shelley wants the reader to feel about power — set but not attempted, she called wrap-up first; (2) Shelley's 1818 context written as a clause in her own sentence — reached orally only. Then: second Power and Conflict poem (London or My Last Duchess) to give P1.01 a comparison partner and to test K3.2 unaided on new material. Starter every session until clean twice running: both Ozymandias quotations, scored. Still blocked on all four set texts — no copies.

What this session changed

TopicNameChangeEvidence recorded
P1.01Developing → SecureAll five aspects covered: irony, sand as time, sonnet form as mockery, traveller framing, 1818 context (identified George III unprompted after one nudge). Final paragraph unaided: 'Shelley reduces the entire empire to a single phrase, "Nothing beside remains", to show that lots of time has passed'. Level 4 — clear, explained response, effective use of references, clear understanding of context.
K1Developing → DevelopingSecond attempt narrowed to one angle without being instructed, unlike Tuesday. 'Shelley reduces the entire empire to a single phrase' is writer-as-agent with an active verb and an effect attached. Still developing: the first attempt used what/how/why as visible headings and stacked three quotations; the coherent version was a rewrite, not a first draft.
K5Developing → DevelopingWriter as grammatical subject throughout both attempts, no slips into praising the writer or into character-as-subject. Third session running.
K4.2Gap → GapStarter: 'Nothing beside remains' exact, 'look at my works' for 'Look on my works'. First paragraph then misquoted twice — 'besides' (fourth occurrence in three sessions) and 'the lonely level sands' for 'The lone and level sands' — despite the agreed check rule. Second paragraph correct. Not two clean runs.
K6.1Not started → DevelopingTaught explicitly with a model sentence — context inside a sentence about the text, never as biography. She reached the George III reading orally and carried the idea into her paragraph, but has not yet written context as a subordinate clause herself.
